On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014, the Sunday school held its annual Bake Sale. This year the kids voted to raise money for the Animal Welfare League of Laurel. We are THRILLED to announce that we raised $431.65 for this wonderful cause! This is quite possibly our most successful bake sale, to date! What an incredible blessing it is to be a part of such a generous congregation. No matter what it is that the children of our church do, you support them - and so many other areas of our church. Thank you for your love, support, and generosity. A HUGE thank you to all of our families who baked, frosted, and put together such delectable delights, without your efforts we absolutely couldn't taste such sweet success.

As we enter into April it's time to turn our focus to the Sunday School's next important event - the annual Bake Sale. The Laurel UMC's Annual Sunday School Bake Sale will be held on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014 before and after worship. We hold this Bake Sale each year to raise funds for an organization of the kids' choosing. Our first year was all about creating "Sunshine Baskets" for the children's ward at one of our hospitals, next we raised money for ZooMontana, then we put the money back into the church for the new roof, and last year we raised money for the Jessie Rees Foundation's JoyJars. At this time the kids and I are still throwing ideas around about what we want the money to go towards, but we'll definitely be able to fill in that blank by Bake Sale time. This is an event that could not be done without the parents and families of our kiddos, so please be sure to take the time to sign up on the clipboard in the education wing so we have some idea of what kinds (and how many) goodies we can expect. So mark those calendars and prepare to bring your appetites and pocketbooks on Palm Sunday so that you can support our Sunday school's most beloved fundraiser! Love & Blessings on your week, Becca On Sunday, March 9, 2014 the kids kicked off the Lenten season with our annual Praying Arm Pretzel Chapel Time activity. It continues to be a fan favorite for everyone from our littlest little, to our biggest big!
We had many more pictures, but unfortunately the camera's SD card was in the midst of an epic fail, but at least we came away with four to share! We welcomed two buddies this Sunday morning - hope to see you again! Following is the prayer we pray together before putting the pretzels in the ovens and dispersing to our classrooms: Gracious God, we ask you to bless these pretzels that we have prepared. Thank you for each of the hands that created them. Each time we eat pretzels this season may we be reminded that Lent is a time for prayer. Help us to remember to pray each day. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. And in case you've misplaced the easy-peasy recipe for creating your own pretzels at home, here it is: Recipe with frozen bread dough: Ingredients

With the Lenten season upon us, it can only mean one thing: Praying Arm Pretzel Sunday!!! Definitely a fan favorite of the kids. We were meant to make our pretzels last Sunday, March 2, only to have the epic fail of the dough not rising. Fortunately we had already been planning a 'do-over Sunday' because the weather was horrible last week. HORRIBLE! We actually had a not too shabby crowd - parents/grandparents...You rock! So, be sure to let the kiddos know that this Sunday, March 9, 2014, is Praying Arm Pretzel Sunday. We're hoping and praying for cooperative dough and oodles of kids for this special Sunday! Other things to be aware of...

Watch the movie's trailer below... Tis the season! Every year at this time as we make our way to Thanksgiving our thoughts turn to Laurel UMC's Sunday school Christmas program. We don't have many practices scheduled, so hopefully you'll be able to squeeze us into your already jam-packed lives. Our 2013 Christmas Program goes by the name of Christmas Morning Live! by Nancy Moore. We are looking forward to attempting some new and (hopefully) exciting things with this program, so please keep us in your prayers as we move forward! But let's get down to the info that you need: Laurel UMC's 2013 Christmas Program Rehearsal Schedule: *1st Practice - Saturday, Nov. 16 @ 9:30-11am *2nd Practice - Saturday, Nov. 23 @ 9:30-11am *3rd Practice - Sunday, Dec. 8 @ 9-10am (during Sunday school) *DRESS REHEARSAL - Saturday, Dec. 14 @ 9:15am-12:30pm *Christmas Program - Sunday, Dec. 15 @ 10:15am. **Please bring your children at the regularly scheduled Sunday school time on the day of the program (9am). We will feed the kids lunch following the Dress Rehearsal, though we will still have them ready for pick up at 12:30. Chapel Time will also be used for rehearsal, so even if your kiddo absolutely cannot make it to rehearsals, we can get a lot accomplished on Sunday mornings as well. Other important dates: *Advent Wreath hand-out - Sunday, Nov. 24 during Chapel Time *Hanging of the Greens - Saturday, Dec. 7 @ 9am. There will be activities and decorating tasks the kids can participate in, so bring the whole family out to help deck the halls of Laurel UMC! *Christmas Tea - Saturday, Dec. 14 @ 12pm *Caroling - Sunday, Dec. 15 @ 4:45pm This year the caroling will include a hayride to the local Care Centers where our main caroling takes place. A chili supper will follow back in the church's Fellowship Hall. *There will be NO Sunday School on Dec. 29 After the hustle and bustle of Halloween and trick-or-treating, families everywhere gleefully anticipate the ending of Daylight Saving Time, happily taking on that extra hour of sleep. This year Daylight Saving Time ends in the wee hours of the morning on Nov. 3, 2013. So be sure to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday, Nov. 2 and consider changing the batteries in your smoke detectors, while you're at it. Every year on this particular Sunday we are met with early birds who forgot to change their clocks, so be sure to take the gift of an extra hour of sleep and snooze with it! But don't forget that this Sunday, Nov. 3 in Chapel Time we'll also be revealing the winners of the kiddo's Costume Contest and the teacher's pumpkin carving contest! Have a safe and Happy Halloween, we'll see you Sunday, bring a friend! You might also like: For the past few years at Laurel UMC we've chosen the Sunday before Halloween and turned it into a costumed extravaganza that spills into the following Sunday. And I'm here to tell you that things are no different in 2013! The kids are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to Sunday school (keeping it church appropriate, please!) where they will take part in a costume contest. The kids and teachers get to vote on: *Best All Around Costume *Cutest Costume *Most Original Costume *Funniest Costume Prizes are awarded in each category the following Sunday. And this year we've added a little twist to this fun-filled Sunday: The teachers will be carving pumpkins and presenting them for the kids to vote on those as well. The classroom/teacher with the most votes will get to have a party! So, be sure to come decked out in your Halloween best this Sunday, October 27, 2013. And of course, bring a friend! Calling all dads, grandpas, uncles, 'adopted' male figures and their kids! (Though "kids" is wide open to interpretation!) Family Ministries is sponsoring a Dad & Me Date on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. Things will kickoff at 11am with a taco lunch at the church, followed by some 'rolling' good times bowling at Fat Cat Lanes. In this fast-paced, busy world that we live in it's nice to slow down and spend some quality time with not just the family, but our church family as well. So, whether the "kids" are 6, 16, or 46 we invite all dads to take part in this afternoon of fun with the kids. Since we've upped the ante on Bible verse memorization this past week, it was pointed out to me that it might be helpful to share the Bible verses so that the parents can help their kiddos earn a trip to the Treasure Chest. I'll do my best to stay on top of the verses and sharing them here in the Kid Connection. First, the curriculum that we're currently using (Grow, Proclaim, Serve!) makes life a little easier in the land of memorizing verses because the focus is on one verse over the course of a unit. I'm considering adding bonus prize opportunities for being able to share about the previous week's story/lesson, so take the time and look over the sheets your kids are (hopefully) bringing home from Sunday school each week. So, with no further ado, the Bible verses... Unit 1: Sept. 8-Sept. 29 "Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening." -1 Samuel 3:9 Unit 2: Oct. 6-Oct. 29 "I will live in the Lord's house as long as I live. -Psalm 23:6 In the meantime, I'll try and drop a line about the stories the kids are exploring each week, just in case your Sunday school papers get lost in that mysterious vortex that ours do in my family. See you in Sunday school, bring a friend! Becca |
