2017 VBS in Review
Another week of Vacation Bible School is in the books and it was a bit of a record-breaking kind of year! Here’s a look at how things went by the numbers: Day 1: 46 kids 32 youth & adult volunteers 1 real life superhero Day 2: 53 kids 33 youth & adult volunteers A day of discovering our own superpowers Day 3: 57 kids 36 youth & adult volunteers 1 real life superhero Day 4: 54 kids 36 youth & adult volunteers 1 real life superhero This year’s theme was Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God, and it was just incredible! The kids really responded to the program – it truly was a spectacular week. Thank you, again, to everyone who helped in one capacity or another – whether it was donating food and supplies, money, or time – we know we couldn’t do this without your love and support! I am always especially appreciative of the folks who take the time to help turn my ideas into realities, ultimately creating an incredibly fun space for the kids. So, a shout out to the Amestoy, Erb, Keller, Lester, and Love families; and Miss Lauryn, I so appreciate you all!

According to our countdown (and at the time of this writing) we have a measly 19 days until it's time to open our doors for this year's VBS extravaganza! With that in mind we want to make sure you're as connected as possible. Following is this year's "family letter" sent out with the registration and volunteer forms, as well as a few things to expect at this year's VBS. Dear Families, We’re bringing a global fair to the kids at our 2013 Laurel UMC Vacation Bible School, Everywhere Fun Fair: Where God's World Comes Together! Your children will become neighbors at the Everywhere Fun Fair as we explore God's welcoming love and discover how Jesus teaches us to be great neighbors. After a high-energy opening at Friendship Central (the sanctuary), the neighbors make their way to the Bible Bazaar. Interactive Bible lessons reveal five Friendship Phrases for living as the kind of neighbor Jesus teaches us to be, and your neighbors will discover Scripture Souvenir memory verses that will boost their faith long after VBS. The children will expand on what they’ve learned by participating in a variety of activities: making their own art projects at the Creation Zone, singing (and dancing) to new music at the Choral Corner, exploring science activities at Innovation Station, participating in recreational activities at Global Games, and enjoying tasty snacks at the Eatery Expo. We hope you’ll mark your calendars and step right up and join us at the Laurel United Methodist Church, 307 West Fourth Street on Monday, July 8, 2013 through Thursday, July 11, 2013. We’ll meet from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., though registration/sign-in will begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 8th. We’d also like to invite youth in grades 6 and beyond to join us as VBS Volunteers and encourage you in that capacity as well. To register or to find out more about Everywhere Fun Fair, call the church office at 628-6362 or checkout what the website has to offer, or email Becca at [email protected]. Sincerely, Becca Stewart Your Everywhere Fun Fair VBS Neighborhood leader VBS Colors of the Day (the kids are invited to wear variations of these colors each day. Dress code: comfy casual!): Monday 7/8 – ORANGE/GREEN Wednesday 7/10 - BLUE Tuesday 7/9 – RED Thursday 7/11 - PURPLE We'll once again be drawing for camper of the day prizes at the closing of each day with a bonanza of prize give-outs on the last day. This year will be even more exciting, as we'll be running with this carnival/fair theme - the drawings will be done using a balloon-dart board! (Whether we'll actually bust out the darts remains to be seen, but it will be oodles of fun)! We're excited to get decorating and get the ball rolling on this year's VBS - come early each day, we'll have the sanctuary moving and grooving with our VBS videos! We hope to see you there, and bring a friend! Lawn mowers are running, the sun is shining, rain is (occasionally) falling; that can only mean that we're fast-approaching summer and so, the end of Sunday School for the year. Laurel UMC's last day of Sunday School for the 2012-13 school year is on Sunday, May 19, 2013. It's a super crazy weekend as we hold our first ever Spring Carnival on Saturday, May 18, as well. We have lots of great things planned for our final Chapel Time on the 19th, with drawings and prizes galore to be given out. Prizes, snacks, one final (awesome) Sunday School lesson for the year, and we'll top everything off with a Root Beer Float/Ice Cream Social immediately following Worship at 11:15AM. Don't forget, we'll still be playing "Where's Godwin" throughout the summer, as he continues to explore the church, awaiting the start of VBS. Just a refresher: Find Godwin on Sunday mornings and the first kiddo to bring him to me (Becca) gets to take a prize from the "Buddy Basket." Our VBS page is up and running - you can register online, print hard copies, or just get any and all of the VBS info you might need. 2013 VBS dates are: Monday, July 8 - Thursday, July 11 6PM - 8PM Through July 16-19, 2012 Laurel UMC was filled with kiddos and bouncing with activity. Our 2012 VBS program was Operation Overboard: Dare to Dive Deep with God!, and it was outstanding. Perhaps one of the best we've done since I became the Christian Ed. Director. One of the things that helped us to fully appreciate the awesomeness of the program was our new video and sound system that is approaching its first birthday. I cannot tell you how much fun it was to have the music videos playing as the kids arrived and to watch them get their grooves on from the word go. (And let me tell you, our sanctuary was pounding!) The kids LOVED it! Our Bible storytellers really took things to the next level and had the kids in stitches while also embarking on some valuable learning. Crafts are always a fan favorite with the kiddos, and they did not disappoint this year. The weather wasn't totally working with our plans for outdoor recreation the first two days of VBS, but our ever adaptable leaders made it work inside. Again, the kids had a blast! This year, thanks to some wonderful cash donations, we were able to add in daily drawings for "Diver of the Day," which ended with a Diver(s) of the Day extravaganza on Thursday. Needless to say, the kids loved that. (Who doesn't love to win things?) In addition to that wonderful goodness, the kids were also blessed with handmade backpacks at the start of the week to hold all of their various goodies, thanks to some utterly fabulous ladies (and one gentleman) of our church. The kids adored these backpacks, and there was such a fun variety of colors and patterns for them to choose from. As an added bonus, we'll be taking the extras and turning them into a mission project once Sunday School begins. Finally, the kids closed out the week by getting to choose a pool noodle to take home with them. That was thanks to one very generous family and our Youth Group. It really and truly was an incredible week of fun and fellowship. With that, here are some thank yous that absolutely must be made: First on the list are all of the individuals who provided much-needed items for VBS: from decorations to snacks to literally everything we asked for help with. Our VBS program couldn't go on without your support, thank you! Next come our incredible, amazing - complete-and-utter-blessings - Volunteers. Every year you ride the (exhausting, yet awesome) wave that is VBS, and again, without you VBS would not be possible. Finally, our beautiful kiddos and families. Thank you parents for sharing your children with us, and thank you kids for coming and making every second of preparation and hard work worth it. We hope you had as much fun as we did! We'll close things out with our 2012 VBS stats: Monday's Attendance: 39 Divers (kids), 23 Volunteers Tuesday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 25 Volunteers Wednesday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 28 Volunteers Thursday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 26 Volunteers Dates for the 2011 Vacation Bible School have been set!
