In Sunday school land at Laurel UMC if you want to take a trip to Miss Becca's treasure chest, you must tell her last week's Bible verse. This is all well and dandy but we've been rocking the same verse for the past few weeks, so it was time to up the ante. Given our wide-ranging ages, if the kiddos knew the verse, but not necessarily the verse (1 Samuel 3:1-21, for example) they could still take a trip to the treasure chest. However, this past Sunday (Oct. 6) we made knowing the whole enchilada a necessity. So in order to sneak a peek into the treasure chest the kids need to know the verse and the book, chapter, and verse number. We also happened to get a new verse this week, so if the kids come in knowing the whole enchilada from our previous verse plus their new verse, then they get to walk away with two treasures! Not too shabby, if I say so myself...And I do! So, be sure to study those verses kiddos, we'll see you at Sunday school!

This past Sunday, Oct. 6, I took the kids on a field trip, showing them what's what with the various bulletin boards that we claim as our own in Sunday school land - outside the classrooms. The hope is to not only engage our parents, but to get the kids involved too. First we wandered down the hallway and we talked about how they can support their fabulous Sunday school teachers with the Sunday School Teacher of the Month bulletin board - pictures, cards, notes...Anyone care to guess what this Sunday's Chapel Time activity is going to be? Next we talked about things they might want to check out on our main bulletin board. And that's when the excitement level amped up about 110%. You see, last week's Pinterest Find of the Week was the Erupting Pumpkin Experiment! We discovered this particular activity courtesy of the blog, Growing a Jeweled Rose: Learning and Loving Through Messy Play. Since we're firmly in the land of October it is the perfect time to discover just what your pumpkin can do for you, in this case it can, well, erupt...throw up, whatever. The kids were so excited by this experiment our Pinterest Find of the Week will have to be held over one more week just by popular demand. And all you need for this fun experiment is a pumpkin, baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring (see below). Be sure to take a peek at what's new on our bulletin boards, we're taking the chance and time to make them as interactive as possible. See you in Sunday school; bring a friend! Every year about this time at the Laurel United Methodist Church, we pick a Sunday and declare it to be: Bible Sunday! On this Sunday our latest batch of 3rd Graders in the church receive a copy of the Holy Bible as a gift from the church to them. It is an exciting time in their faith journey as they are recognized to becoming an age where they can truly begin exploring all the wonder that the Bible has to offer. It is our hope that this will be a step forward in their faith journey that will bring them not only answers, but questions to explore and discuss. One could say this giving of the Bible is laying the foundation as they move forward to becoming of age to go through Confirmation classes and make that statement of faith. What a wondrous and amazing time! This year I expect two third graders to receive Bibles, though I'm praying it will be three. Join us on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 as we gift this year's 3rd graders with their very own Bible; we hope to see all of our Sunday School families and a multitude of welcoming faces packing the pews for this latest moment in their faith journey. They will be receiving their Bibles during the 10:15am worship service, we hope to see you there! We received a thank you earlier in the week from the Jessie Rees Foundation, which you can read below: Laurel United Methodist Church (Sunday School Kids), You'll recall that the proceeds from our 2013 Bake Sale went to the Jessie Rees Foundation to create more JoyJars. By taking the time to bake goodies with your family and putting forth your most charming faces, you (along with our generous congregation) were able to raise money for such an important cause! Jessie was and is an excellent example of just how much a single individual with an idea can do for a whole lot of people. Her motto was that saying from the thank you note: "NEGU: Never Ever Give Up!" It doesn't matter how small or young you are, inside is an incredible person who is capable of great and amazing things - you've just got to believe. Believe in you and believe your faith will bring you through! Let's adopt that mission: NEGU!

Superbook teaches children in every language and culture timeless moral truths and life lessons through the captivating, Bible-based adventures of two time-traveling children and their robot friend. So mark those calendars, set those DVRs and get ready to catch this "Amazing Bible-based adventure" on ABC Family, July 1-5, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Source: The Christian Broadcasting Network, press release According to our countdown (and at the time of this writing) we have a measly 19 days until it's time to open our doors for this year's VBS extravaganza! With that in mind we want to make sure you're as connected as possible. Following is this year's "family letter" sent out with the registration and volunteer forms, as well as a few things to expect at this year's VBS. Dear Families, We’re bringing a global fair to the kids at our 2013 Laurel UMC Vacation Bible School, Everywhere Fun Fair: Where God's World Comes Together! Your children will become neighbors at the Everywhere Fun Fair as we explore God's welcoming love and discover how Jesus teaches us to be great neighbors. After a high-energy opening at Friendship Central (the sanctuary), the neighbors make their way to the Bible Bazaar. Interactive Bible lessons reveal five Friendship Phrases for living as the kind of neighbor Jesus teaches us to be, and your neighbors will discover Scripture Souvenir memory verses that will boost their faith long after VBS. The children will expand on what they’ve learned by participating in a variety of activities: making their own art projects at the Creation Zone, singing (and dancing) to new music at the Choral Corner, exploring science activities at Innovation Station, participating in recreational activities at Global Games, and enjoying tasty snacks at the Eatery Expo. We hope you’ll mark your calendars and step right up and join us at the Laurel United Methodist Church, 307 West Fourth Street on Monday, July 8, 2013 through Thursday, July 11, 2013. We’ll meet from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., though registration/sign-in will begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 8th. We’d also like to invite youth in grades 6 and beyond to join us as VBS Volunteers and encourage you in that capacity as well. To register or to find out more about Everywhere Fun Fair, call the church office at 628-6362 or checkout what the website has to offer, or email Becca at [email protected]. Sincerely, Becca Stewart Your Everywhere Fun Fair VBS Neighborhood leader VBS Colors of the Day (the kids are invited to wear variations of these colors each day. (Whether we'll actually bust out the darts remains to be seen, but it will be oodles of fun)! We're excited to get decorating and get the ball rolling on this year's VBS - come early each day, we'll have the sanctuary moving and grooving with our VBS videos! We hope to see you there, and bring a friend! Just a refresher: Find Godwin on Sunday mornings and the first kiddo to bring him to me (Becca) gets to take a prize from the "Buddy Basket." Laurel UMC Spring Carnival: Saturday, May 18, 11a.m. - 2p.m. The Sunday School held its Annual Bake Sale on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013 with great success. This year our Bake Sale was raising funds in support of the Jessie Rees Foundation's JoyJars. You can read more about JoyJars and why we felt this was a great cause for our kiddos to support, below. The 2013 Sunday School Bake Sale raised $359.81, to date. As of this writing donations are still coming in! We can't thank the congregation enough for their generous support each year. Now for more information about the special cause this year's Bake Sale was supporting. Jessie used her JoyJars® to spread hope, joy and love to children fighting life altering medical illnesses. JoyJars® are stuffed with love and are:
Every year we choose February to be our month where we put a special focus on the importance of sharing our faith, and what better way to do that than to Bring a Friend? February was originally chosen as Bring a Friend Month because of Valentine's Day. I figured if we were already spreading love around, we might as well as apply it to our church life as well. Starting Sunday, February 3, 2013 if the kiddos bring a friend to Sunday School, then they and their buddy will get to pick from our special prize basket. We'll be taking a little break from our Books of the Bible review cards and focusing on lessons on God's love during Chapel Time throughout February. On Feb. 17, 2013, however, we'll be making our Praying Arm Pretzels, which is always a favorite day for the kiddos. We hope to see you there...Bring a Friend! |
