Mark your calendars (and amp up those appetites) because the Laurel UMC Youth are hosting a Pancake Breakfast to raise money so they can attend Dare 2 Share in Seattle. The Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. Dare 2 Share is an exciting opportunity for our Youth to really grow in their faith. It's does for teens what Women of Faith has done for (female) adults. Interestingly - and tragically - the start of the Dare 2 Share ministries has a direct correlation to the April 20, 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School. Greg Stier, President and Founder of Dare 2 Share Ministries, resigned a pastorate at a church in Arvada, CO following that tragic day to pursue Dare 2 Share full-time. The "driving concept behind this movement is a calling, much like the calling Jesus gave to his disciples...a dare to share." -Dare 2 Share website Certainly you can head over to the Dare 2 Share website to learn more about why our Youth are so fired up to attend this event, but even better, just ask them when you pop in and support their Pancake Breakfast this Sunday.

Mark your calendars and plan to help us pack the pews because the Laurel UMC Youth Group is taking on the awesome challenge of leading the January 27th main Worship Service. You can expect a little moving and grooving as things get ready to start (in that lovely 10:00-10:15 a.m. window), and from there things will be divvied up between various youth, with senior Emily Shelton delivering the sermon. Expect great and wonderful things from this group of bright, faithful young people! We hope to see you there! With December fast approaching there are a few dates that we want you to be aware of. First, Advent Wreaths. We'll be handing out Advent Wreaths (or candles for those of you who still have your wreaths from years past) on Sunday, Dec. 2nd. The first Sunday of Advent is Dec. 2nd. Second, Christmas Program. 'Tis the season to set our sights toward the Christmas program. Parents, guardians, go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief, as this year's program requires virtually no memorization! (Really, go ahead and do a happy dance - I know I did). Because of that we'll rehearse during Chapel Time and only require two Saturday rehearsals (including the dress rehearsal). Christmas Program Practice Schedule:
Third, Hanging of the Greens. Bring the family and come help decorate and prepare our church for the Christmas season on Saturday, Dec. 8th at 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. From your youngest to your oldest, we will have things to for all to help with. The kids are especially invited to get the tree set up in the Fellowship Hall, followed by some crafts. We hope to see you there! Fourth, Caroling. Join us Sunday, Dec 16th at 4:45 p.m. for Christmas Caroling to the local care centers. We will meet at UMC at 4:45 p.m. drive to The Crossings, Evergreen around 5:30 p.m. and then to Tendernest around 6:00 p.m. After caroling we will return to UMC for some hot cocoa, chili and visiting. A signup sheet will be out on the table at church. Please be sure to sign up if you are planning on attending so we can make sure there is enough food. The leaves are changing and falling, which can only mean one thing. It's time to begin searching for the perfect pumpkin and then making the all-important carving decision. This year we've got a couple faithful twists to add to your pumpkin carving options. Our first option is a Shine for Jesus template, which you can see a small glimpse of to the left.
Another option is one that we carved during Chapel Time a few years ago. Here are the shapes of the face (see a picture, here):
Following is The Pumpkin Prayer to go along with this particular template: Dear God, As I carve my pumpkin help me say this prayer: Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top of the pumpkin) Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do. (Clean out the inside) Open my eyes so Your love I will see; (Cut the eyes out in heart shapes) I’m so sorry for turning up my nose to all you’ve given me. (Cut a nose in the shape of a cross) Open my ears so your word I will hear. (Cut the ears shaped like the Bible)-we did rectangles Open my mouth so I can tell others You’re near (cut the mouth in the shape of a fish) Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (Place a candle inside and light it) Don't forget to save those pumpkin seeds to bake for a yummy snack! Happy Halloween! Registration for the 2012 Youth Retreat is now open! The Yellowstone Youth Ministry Team Retreat Committee would like to invite all 6th, 7th and 8th grade youth to come to the Junior High Retreat Bare Faith at:

Family Ministries will be hosting a movie and popcorn night in the Sanctuary on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7p.m., showing Smitty, rated PG. They’ll bring the popcorn, you just need to bring yourself something to drink. Drinks must have a lid, please! About Smitty: When 13-year-old Ben Barrett gets into trouble with the law again, his struggling single mother sends him to spend the summer with his estranged grandfather, Jack. Sensing that Ben needs a friend, Jack gets him a lovable abandoned mutt named Smitty. Can the dog and a friendly neighbor teach Ben about friendship, family, and responsibility? Starring Mira Sorvino, Peter Fonda, and Louis Gossett Jr. The kids have settled into their back-to-school groove and it's time to add another little something to the mix. The first day of Sunday School (and Choir Practice) for the 2012-2013 season is September 9, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. The kids will begin their morning in the Chapel where we will sing, probably dance (we just can't help ourselves), and there will be times when crafting will definitely be a part of our morning start. Additionally, we will continue on our course of learning more about the books of the Bible with our wonderful flash cards. Here's hoping we can get all the way through this year!! Chapel Time is from 9:00-9:15 a.m. after which the kids will be released to their classrooms. We're changing things up a bit this year with a new curriculum and are excited to see what the kids think! We've got a few new things up our sleeves this year, the most important detail is the new addition of Monthly Drawings (if someone can come up with a super cute name for said drawings, you will get the title of being Becca's hero for the day. That alone should inspire you mightily, don't you think?) Here's what you need to know about these drawings:
We look forward to seeing you; bring a friend! Through July 16-19, 2012 Laurel UMC was filled with kiddos and bouncing with activity. Our 2012 VBS program was Operation Overboard: Dare to Dive Deep with God!, and it was outstanding. Perhaps one of the best we've done since I became the Christian Ed. Director. One of the things that helped us to fully appreciate the awesomeness of the program was our new video and sound system that is approaching its first birthday. I cannot tell you how much fun it was to have the music videos playing as the kids arrived and to watch them get their grooves on from the word go. (And let me tell you, our sanctuary was pounding!) The kids LOVED it! Our Bible storytellers really took things to the next level and had the kids in stitches while also embarking on some valuable learning. Crafts are always a fan favorite with the kiddos, and they did not disappoint this year. The weather wasn't totally working with our plans for outdoor recreation the first two days of VBS, but our ever adaptable leaders made it work inside. Again, the kids had a blast! This year, thanks to some wonderful cash donations, we were able to add in daily drawings for "Diver of the Day," which ended with a Diver(s) of the Day extravaganza on Thursday. Needless to say, the kids loved that. (Who doesn't love to win things?) In addition to that wonderful goodness, the kids were also blessed with handmade backpacks at the start of the week to hold all of their various goodies, thanks to some utterly fabulous ladies (and one gentleman) of our church. The kids adored these backpacks, and there was such a fun variety of colors and patterns for them to choose from. As an added bonus, we'll be taking the extras and turning them into a mission project once Sunday School begins. Finally, the kids closed out the week by getting to choose a pool noodle to take home with them. That was thanks to one very generous family and our Youth Group. It really and truly was an incredible week of fun and fellowship. With that, here are some thank yous that absolutely must be made: First on the list are all of the individuals who provided much-needed items for VBS: from decorations to snacks to literally everything we asked for help with. Our VBS program couldn't go on without your support, thank you! Next come our incredible, amazing - complete-and-utter-blessings - Volunteers. Every year you ride the (exhausting, yet awesome) wave that is VBS, and again, without you VBS would not be possible. Finally, our beautiful kiddos and families. Thank you parents for sharing your children with us, and thank you kids for coming and making every second of preparation and hard work worth it. We hope you had as much fun as we did! We'll close things out with our 2012 VBS stats: Monday's Attendance: 39 Divers (kids), 23 Volunteers Tuesday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 25 Volunteers Wednesday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 28 Volunteers Thursday's Attendance: 40 Divers, 26 Volunteers A message from Yellowstone Conference: Friends, This year Luccock Park is offering Two-for-One scholarships to youth from any church who either: 1) Did not send any youth to camp at Luccock last year, or 2) Increases their youth participation at Luccock over last year This means youth can bring a friend for free, or can pair up to cut the cost of camp in half. All you have to do is to register online and put "Two-for-One" in the last text box labeled Anything Else We Should Know. I can say with all honesty that I would not be in ministry, nor likely in the church at all, if not for youth camping when I was younger. I can also say with all honesty that no one would have expected me to be the youth that ended up in ministry! Please encourage your youth to attend. They will likely surprise you. Registration and information here: http://yacumc.org/camps/campsessions/4 -Rev. Jeremy Scott Luccock Board of Trustees, member Mother's Day is fast approaching and since we have a beautiful new screen and sound system, we decided we need to put that to good use on this special day. So, we're asking for your favorite photos of your mom/grandmas, you and your mom/grandmas, you and your kids...You love 'em, we want 'em! We'd prefer that you email your photos to the church office, though we do have the use of a scanner, if necessary. The deadline to submit pictures is May 9, 2012. We hope to make this a special addition to our Mother's Day service; get your pictures in today! Also, if you have thoughts on music you'd like included in the video, we're absolutely open to suggestion! |
